How to Reuse a Custom ID in Ripple

To ensure accurate data tracking and prevent confusion, Ripple does not allow a Custom ID to be reused if it is still associated with a participant—particularly if the participant was only removed from a study (not deleted from their profile).

If you need to reuse a Custom ID, follow the steps below to properly disconnect it from the original participant.

Why This Matters

Deleting a participant from a study only removes their association with that specific study, but the Custom ID still remains linked to their Ripple profile.

To fully disconnect the Custom ID from the original participant and make it available for reuse, follow this process.

Steps to Reuse a Custom ID

1. Re-add the Original Participant to the Study

  • Navigate to the Registry.
  • Locate the participant who previously used the Custom ID.
  • Add them back to the study in which the ID was originally assigned.

2. Assign a New Custom ID to the Participant

  • Once added to the study, open the participant’s profile within the study.
  • Update their Custom ID to a different, unique value.

NOTE: This step is crucial—it clears the original Custom ID and makes it available for reuse.

3. Remove the Participant from the Study

  • After assigning a new Custom ID, remove the participant from the study.
  • This action ensures they are no longer associated with the original Custom ID or the study.

Repeat as Needed

Repeat the above steps for each Custom ID you wish to reuse.
