Linking Survey Questions to Variables on the Participant Card
Linking Survey Questions to Variables on Participant Profile Cards
-
Linking Survey Responses:
- Most survey questions can be linked to the participant's profile card.
- When linked, survey responses will automatically update the participant's profile card upon completion.
-
Optional Linking:
- Linking survey questions to a participant variable is not required.
-
Saving Survey Responses:
- All visible survey questions and answers are saved to the survey’s PDF, regardless of whether they are linked to a participant variable.
This ensures flexibility in managing survey data while maintaining a comprehensive record.

Important Note on Linking Survey Variables
If the desired survey variable does not appear in the Survey Variable dropdown:
- The variable may not be configured in a format compatible with your question type.
- Ensure that the Input Type of the question matches the variable’s format.
For a complete list of compatible question types and variable formats, refer to the Survey Question Types help document.
Proper configuration is key to successfully linking survey questions to participant variables.

Note
Avoid Using Built-in "None" and "Other" Options:
When adding radiogroup, dropdown, or checkbox question types, it’s important to try to avoid using the built-in “None” and “Other” options, especially if the question is linked to a custom variable or Ripple’s pre-built variable (e.g., sex, race).
Key Points:
-
Built-in Options:
- If the survey question is linked to a custom variable or Ripple’s pre-built variable, selecting the built-in “None” or “Other” will result in the response not being saved.
- The linked variable will appear blank or empty if these options are selected.
-
Create Your Own “Other” or “None” Options:
- Instead of using the built-in options, add custom “Other” or “None” options to your custom variable or Ripple’s pre-built variable.
- Link the newly added options to the survey via the survey variable to ensure the responses are captured properly.
